Aftercare

TEAK AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
Teak furniture from Kit Stone leaves our premises polished but untreated.
Teak is considered by the Timber Research and Development Association as 'Very Durable', the highest classification possible. Our timber, being slightly darker than
most, is incredibly high in natural oils thus repelling the detrimental effects of the weather and requiring little maintenance. Dependant on personal taste, a prompt decision will need to be made regarding whether or not to treat the timber with any kind of wood finish.

Leaving the furniture untreated
This is the maintenance free approach that we advocate. If left untreated, the furniture will gradually turn an elegant silver grey colour so evocative of the best English gardens. As the very surface layer oxidises on exposure to the elements it will become less smooth and small cracks may appear, especially on the end grain. These are perfectly normal characteristics and will not affect the strength or long-term durability of the furniture. In hot, dry and sunny conditions, some cracks may appear larger, but these will normally reduce in cooler and wetter conditions. A gentle rub down with wire wool will remove any roughness in the early stages of weathering if you so wish.

Treating the furniture when brand new
To help maintain a more original appearance, the furniture should be treated with an application of boiled linseed oil, taking care to follow manufacturers instructions and safety precautions. This is best applied with a cloth rather than brush. Treating the timber will normally help to reduce the amount of end grain cracking and possible warping that can occur over a long period of time. The weathering process is also slowed as it limits the changes in moisture of the wood. It should however be noted that once this course of treatment is started it needs to be continued regularly twice yearly to prevent uneven colouring as the wood weathers. It is not necessary to treat the wood to 'preserve it'.

Re-treating and cleaning the furniture
When re-treating the furniture, it is essential that it is first cleaned to remove any dirt. Use a scrubbing brush and warm soapy water. When completely dry, lightly sand the furniture paying particular attention to any weathered areas.
When completely clean and free from weathered areas and detritus, the furniture can then be re-treated following the procedure described above.
We hope whichever course of action you choose your furniture gives you many years of happy service.
Once built and weathered we do not advocate disassembly for storage, as this will affect long term strength and stability
